William Foster

Postdoctoral Research Assistant

I am interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms which are responsible for strengthening or weakening connection between cells in the brain (synaptic plasticity). I am specifically focussed on roles of endo-lysosomal Ca2+ within these processes.  By understanding the fundamental properties of synaptic plasticity we aim to identify therapeutic targets for synaptic disorders.

I am co-supervised by Prof. Nigel Emptage and Prof. Antony Galione, my research incorporates techniques which are commonly used in both research groups. These include: extensive electrophysiology in various configurations, slice physiology, neuronal/dendritic Ca2+ imaging, pharmacology, immunochemistry and some molecular biology.

I am currently finishing my D.Phil, I aim to viva in May 2017. I have secured a Wellcome Trust funded Post-Doctorial position with Prof. Galione, and aim to continue my research on the roles of endo-lysosomal Ca2+ in neurons.
